Organizing Your Craft Supplies

Let’s talk organizing your craft supplies! Organizing is just a fancy word for cleaning in my book and it can be a daunting task, especially for crafters! The further into our journey the more tools and supplies we accumulate. Of course, accumulating all the right tools means you’ll need to find a place to store all of them, which is especially true if you live in a small space where every inch counts. The good news is that the craft world is full of storage options that fit every need, whether you live in a large house and dabble in a bunch of different crafts or you focus on a single material and rent a cozy apartment.

For me having some sort of system for storing my stuff helps me feel more creative and stay inspired.
Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Step 1: Start by sorting your supplies into categories, such as paper, fabric, paint, adhesives, brushes, ribbon, wood pieces, etc. This will make it easier to find what you need when you need it. But hey don’t feel you need to do it all in one sitting. Break it up into 3’s. Work on 3 items, or fill 3 tubs. Start small, finish the three and you will feel accomplished and inspired to do more. The way you store your items will change over time as you work with it and gain more supplies. Don’t feel you have to have it “right” the first time. I tend to “re-organize” my supplies every 6-12 months as I acquire new stuff and use up material.

Step 2: Invest in some storage containers and label them clearly so you know what is inside. Need budget-friendly ideas, do a quick search on Pinterest and find tons of ways to create storage containers for little to no money. Boxes covered in paper, fabric, or paint can create pretty storage on shelves and they come in all sizes perfect for your supplies! Recycled Jars are a great way to store smaller items. Think ribbon, scraps, buttons, wood bubbles, etc. These are Dollar Tree jars I used to store my wood pieces, but any food jar with a painted lid would work! Dollar tree has really upped their storage products, be sure to check them out!

Step 3: Use wall space to store items such as yarn, ribbon, paint, etc. Are you out of space? Consider going vertical. There are lots of options from peg boards to shelves for vertical storage. What better way to store ribbon, yarn, beads, etc than on the wall for a pretty display? Group colors together and create your own rainbow! Home talk has a great article on building a peg board just for crafts!  This is on my to-do list! I Love it!

Step 4: Keep your crafting space neat and tidy by putting things away in their designated spots when you’re done with them. This one is tough for me as once I am finished I hate the cleanup but I am working on it. I do know that if I clean up after I am finished I feel like creating more the next day as my space is ready to go. It’s a habit I hope to continue to build. Are you good at cleaning up?

Step 5: Keep a notebook to keep track of patterns, ideas, and projects. I love a paper notebook and have plenty for all my ideas but I also have a Pinterest board! I am a huge list maker and have to jot my ideas down almost immediately or I tend to forget! You can get use a notebook to help track your supplies as well. This can help if you have a lot of say stamps, yarn, ribbon, etc that you don’t see all the time.
